Catalina Island, located 22 miles from Los Angeles, is a beloved weekend destination among Southern Californians. Within its area of approximately 76 square miles, Catalina has only two small towns (Avalon and Two Harbors), leaving its rugged interior untouched. The protected landscape of the interior is of great interest to ecologists, because it is home to more than two dozen endemic plant and animal species. If you wish to explore the interior–yet would prefer a more relaxing alternative to hiking the 37-mile Trans-Catalina Trail–consider one of the numerous tours available through local companies.
