Step 1
Book passage by sea ferry from Los Angeles to Catalina Island. Ferries depart from Long Beach, San Pedro and Marina del Rey in Los Angeles and Newport Beach and Dana Point in Orange County. The expensive alternative is to fly over by helicopter. Ferries go to both Avalon and Two Harbors on the island, so be sure your destination port matches the tour departure(s) you chose.
Step 2
Stretch your legs with a walking tour on the island, such as Chuck Liddell’s Avalon Walk-About Tours or the GPS self-guided walking tour–or the Ghost Tours of Catalina. Catalina Island’s Discovery Tour also includes some hiking.
Step 3
See Catalina Island’s underwater world with a glass-bottom boat tour or a semi-submersible tour. The latter is a boat tour where patrons sit in a compartment below the boat’s waterline and peer out portholes.
Step 4
Watch Catalina Island’s shore-based wildlife and take in its striking sea cliffs on a sea kayaking tour. This tour combines good exercise and the rocky island’s scenery with bird watching and the possibility of encounters with sea lions. Snorkeling from Descanso Beach is also included in the package.
Step 5
Fly through the air on the Catalina Zipline Eco-Tour. Sit suspended in a harness and ride down a 1,100-foot-long series of cables from an altitude of 500 feet down to just 60 feet. At each stop is an eco-station, where you will be educated on the island’s history and ecology.
