A Southern California Beach

From Santa Barbara to San Diego, each beach area has its own distinct charms and attractions. What almost every California beach vacation shares in common besides the natural beauty of the Pacific Ocean is a delightfully sunny, mild climate throughout most of the year.

The Southern California beaches and their communities are varied enough to have appeal for just about everyone. The fact that most of these coastal beach towns are still within driving distance of many major attractions and urban business centers is an ideal situation for everyone from families on vacation to business travelers (who hopefully have a spare moment to head for the water and unwind).

There’s Santa Barbara with it’s rich, early Californian history and prime geographic location, nestled between the coast and the mountains. Ventura has a laid back old town atmosphere and lovely harbor, uncrowded even in summer.

There’s Malibu with its beach houses literally inches from the crashing surf, and hilltop mansions with spectacular views. Santa Monica has its amusement pier, great shopping, beach cottages and proximity to UCLA, Hollywood, Beverly Hills and LAX.

Long Beach has the Queen Mary, Little Naples with its gondolas, and many boating opportunities in Queens Bay and Alamitos Bay. You can catch a ferry to Catalina Island from here as well. Once there you can do some skin diving or view the undersea life on a glass bottom boat tour. Then there’s Huntington Beach, or “Surf City” as it’s otherwise known. A great place to take the family, and especially a family of surfers!

Newport Beach is a haven for boating enthusiasts and beach lovers alike. For those wanting to find a vacation rental, Newport Beach has a whole peninsula full of charming beach cottages. A short ferry ride away, Balboa Island does too. Waterfront homes range from grandiose to simply sweet. Nearby Corona del Mar is a delightful small community with blufftop homes in a neighborhood above the beach.

Further south in Laguna Beach, there is a multitude of beautiful beach coves. Laguna is also full of excellent and varied restaurants and art galleries. The annual art festivals draw art lovers from all over every summer.

San Clemente is a small beach town with adorable houses and neighborhoods. San Clemente and neighboring San Onofre have popular beach campgrounds on the bluffs.

On down the coast is North County San Diego, which includes Oceanside, with its miles of sandy beaches, Carlsbad, a lovely town near Legoland, Encinitas, which has the Quail Botanical Gardens, and posh Del Mar, with its famous racetrack. La Jolla is gorgeously elegant and visited by tourists from all over the world. It’s famous cove is frequented by snorkelers and kayakers.

Neighboring San Diego has vacation homes all along the isthmus between Pacific Beach and Mission Bay. The weather is superb, as is the water temperature in summer and fall. Plus, the beach is only one of San Diego’s many attractions. Among them is the San Diego Zoo, Balboa Park and Sea World.

As a Southern California native and avid beach lover, I’ve explored much along our coast, yet I never can seem to get enough of it: the fresh ocean breeze, the tinkling of wind chimes, warm sand massaging my bare feet, swimming in the exhilarating surf, or watching the color of the water pale in the fading twilight.

Even the sound of the waves crashing on the shore gently melts away the stresses of everyday life.

A Harbor, Beaches, Boating;
Newport Beach Has It All!

This Newport Beach vacation guide includes information about where to stay and what to do while visiting the area, including Balboa Island, Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar.

A Newport Beach vacation is ideal for the whole family, as there is a multitude of recreational activities available, such as boating, swimming, surfing, biking, skating and just plain hanging out at the beach.

Inviting Newport Beach Surf

Newport Beach is in Orange County between Huntington Beach and Laguna. While Huntington Beach has great surfing, and Laguna famous for its beautiful coves and art galleries, Newport is a boater’s haven with it’s picturesque harbor. It has lovely ocean beaches too, along the peninsula where there are many cottages and vacation rentals.

The Balboa Peninsulain Newport Beach extends for about 6 miles, consisting mostly of wide sandy beaches and two large piers. A boardwalk stretches along the length of it, great for biking, skating, jogging or strolling. You can rent bicycles and surreys near either of the piers.

At the end of the peninsula is a famous body surfing spot, the Wedge Newport Beach.

A very fun, casual restaurant with lots of character is the Crab Cooker, on Newport Blvd., near the Newport Pier.

At The Piers

Both the Newport Pier and Balboa Pier are areas with several places to eat and shop. Ruby’s Diner at the end of Balboa Pier has great views with both inside and outside dining available. You can also get a cup of chili or ice cream cone from their outside window.

Balboa Island

No Newport Beach vacation is complete without a visit to Balboa Island. Inland from the Balboa Pier is a small car ferry, which takes cars, pedestrians and bikers on a short but scenic journey to Balboa Island. Once there, you can stroll around the island on the boardwalk, viewing the bayfront homes, vacation cottages and variety of docked yachts. Several small public piers marked with blue trim allow fishing and boating access.

The small sandy public beaches are great for families with small children, though the water quality may be dubious at times. Sunbathers can also enjoy the peaceful atmosphere here. There are no bathrooms along these beaches, but there is a public one on the island side of the ferry landing and another one behind the fire station in the village.

Balboa has a small main street filled with adorable shops, a few restaurants, and a couple of stands with the famous Balboa Bar and frozen bananas for sale. The ice cream bars and frozen bananas on a stick are dipped in chocolate and rolled in the topping of your choice.

Newport Harbor

Newport Beach Harbor has one of the largest amounts of yachts docked in the entire country. You can kayak, sail, motor or take a harbor cruise around the bay. You may even want to dine while out on the water with a Newport Beach dinner cruise.

If you enjoy driving your own vessel out in the harbor amongst the pleasure boats, look for a Newport Beach boat rental.

Coastal Neighbors

Corona del Mar is just south of Newport Beach. It is a relatively small beach, (actually two), below a bluff and is a favorite place to swim and body board.

Further south is Crystal Cove Newport Beach, a state park that has miles of undeveloped beach, except for the historical district, which has cottages you can rent on the beach.

The Back Bay

The Newport Beach Back Bay has recreational activities from birdwatching to sailing lessons.

The Newport Beach Dunes is also located in the back bay, off of Pacific Coast Highway, and is a place you can camp by the water. It has its own beach. See our Newport Dunes page, for more information on what is offered there.

Fashion Island

Fashion Island Newport Beach is a large, very nicely landscaped shopping area in between Jamboree and MacArthur Boulevard. It’s like an island because it is surrounded by a circle of Newport Center Drive East and West. There are large department stores such as Macys, Neiman Marcus, Bloomingdales and Nordstom. There is also a Whole Foods Market, several restaurants, and a host of other smaller shops. You’ll find all kinds of restaurants, from fast food to find dining and everything in between.

There are way more San Diego tourist attractions than you might imagine, so I hope you’re planning to stay awhile. If your vacation time is short, you’ll just have to choose from this humongous array of fun things to do.

Of course, different things will interest different people, whether you are a family with teenagers, a group of friends on college break, parents with toddlers, honeymooning newlyweds, or retired baby boomers enjoying your freedom. There’s definitely something for everyone here, from tours to museums to theme parks to historical sights. • Bazaar Del Mundo — in Old Town, this open Mexican style market has unique shops and al fresco dining
• Seaport Village San Diego — shops, entertainment and restaurants by the bay
• Birch Aquarium San Diego — part of the Scripps Institute, located just north in La Jolla
• Coronado — lovely beach, resorts, marina, restaurants…take the ferry or famous bridge

What did you like best about this beach?: White sand like talcum powder, great pier. Santa Barbara has the best of Southern California without the congestion and smog. It’s Idyllic!
What was your favorite activity there?: Segwaying along the beach.
Where was your favorite place to eat and why?: Only ate in one restaurant there. I don’t remember the name, but it was a Mexican Restaurant on Cabrillo. It was very good and reasonably priced.
Where did you stay?: With relatives.
Any special story you’d like to share with the world about your Southern California beach experience?: I lived in San Clemente during my teen years and loved it. This was my first trip back (2006)and had a wonderful time. Really made me miss living there. I’m going back this year (July 2007) with my daughter, and can’t wait.
Any last tips you can offer future visitors to this beach?: Make sure to visit the little sea life museum on Stearn’s Wharf. A baby shark will swim right up on to your outstreched hand. It is very inexpensive. Also enjoyed the sand sculptures.

What did you like best about this beach?: Clean sand, great beach weather (not too hot, not cold), funky town, great mix of people (all races, ages, families, singles). Not over-run when I visited.
What was your favorite activity there?: My daughter loved all the volleyball nets that were set up. I enjoyed walking on the pier.
Where was your favorite place to eat and why?: We stopped in at a “hand made ice cream” parlour (1 block directly up from the pier). The ice cream was great (big servings, nice service).
Any last tips you can offer future visitors to this beach?: May not be the best beach for experienced surfers: The day we visited, there were surfers in the water, but the waves were almost non-existent. They looked a little like beginners to me, so I wonder if this is a “beginner surfer beach” because there weren’t great waves. Maybe we visited on a calm ocean day.

Any special story you’d like to share with the world about your Southern California beach experience?: Er…okay, I went into this cave by the beach. the waves would come in and there were rocks to climb on that were formed by erosion. it was really fun to explore the mini cave and jump off into the water. I recommend it for kids. And that place has great snorkeling and swimming. (editor’s note: parents should closely monitor their kids around the rocks and water, especially as the tide rises.)
Any last tips you can offer future visitors to this beach?: Bring snorkel gear towel. (There’s no room for lounging).

Any special story you’d like to share with the world about your Southern California beach experience?: Coronado is a great place to spend the day because it is not quite so frenzied on the busiest summer days. Dolphins swim the length of the beach and can be spotted throughout the day. Navy SEALS and BUD/S trainees run the length of the beach regularly. Planes fly overhead to land at North Island. Having a C5A fly overhead is a thrill! On occasion the Hotel Del has a special events fireworks show over the beach.
Any last tips you can offer future visitors to this beach?: Sunscreen up! You are going to want to spend the day relaxing in a beautiful, relaxed setting. Southern California at its best!

A Sublime Day At The Santa Barbara Zoo

Some of the highlights for me this time were the meerkats, the otters, the white snow leopard, the Channel Island fox, and the California Condors.

It’s smaller and not as magnificent as the San Diego Zoo, but it is so relaxing and uncrowded, I just love going there.

Love to salt water fish? If you’ve fished around San Diego and Del Mar, you’re just hours away from some of the finest fishing in the world. Baja’s Sea of Cortez is a natural fish trap, about 700 miles long, separating the Baja peninsula and mainland Mexico.

The more famous region at the tip – Cabo San Lucas, La Paz and the East Cape areas are known for their big game fish – Striped and Blue Marlin, Dorado (Mahi mahi), tuna, Wahoo (Ono) and other tropical fishes.

But from San Felipe south to the midriff islands is a lesser fished and visited area, best explored by small boat. Species like Yellowtail, Dorado, Cabrilla bass and lots of other delicious fish are plentiful. Traditional angling is best, but you’ll also have great luck flyfishing, too.

One of my favorites areas for small boat fishing is Bahia de los Angeles, or “LA Bay” as the gringos call it. It is nearly halfway down the peninsula, just north of Guerrero Negro, famous for Scammons Lagoon, where the Gray whales comes to frolic after a winter in the Bering Sea. But rather than stay on the Pacific side, you take a highway off of Highway 1 east to the Sea of Cortez. The landscape is almost lunar, but once you get to the small town, proceed another 1/2 hour toward Smith Island and at the end of a long spit is an excellent place to camp, launch your boats and enjoy the tranquility.

And the fishing can be unbelieveable! Dorado, Yellowtail, and Cabrilla are the mainstays. The diving is also very good.

Once we took a break from the fishing and took three boats north about 45 minutes and came upon a pod of Orcas, or killer whales.

Like dolphins, they swam up to our boats going full throttle and started following and jumping completely out of the water. Imagine being in a 13′ Zodiak inflatable with 25 horse motor and these 2 ton, 20 foot killer whales jumping right behind you.

These are pictures snapped with my small Olympus in my right hand, while my left hand is on the tiller of the 25 horse Suzuki, going full throttle. The pod held 9 orcas, including a few very young ones. We spotted them from a great ditance by their very tall dorsal fins. As we approached, they came out of curiousity, then put on a spectacular show. All the while we never felt nervous or fearful, though they could have easily knocked our small boat over and injured us (or worse.)

On that same sightseeing trip, we also saw a very large whale shark basking on the surface, as well as some giant Mantas flipping further out in the gulf.

But as a seasoned Baja traveler, if I had to pick one place as my resource, I’d choose the Vagabundos Del Mar Club. They’re like the AAA for Mexico, only geared towards the sportsmen – boaters, campers, hunters, and, well, the fishermen.

Watch the annual California Gray Whale migration from Del Mar

Another benefit to visiting Del Mar is to witness the annual Gray Whale migration from shore. An excellent place to see them is at Seagrove Park, at the foot of 15th Street.

Early in the season, pods of whales journey south to the warm water lagoons in central and southern Baja California, Mexico from the Bering Sea. In the Spring, they return north and are seen farther offshore.There is sense of awe seeing these glorious creatures breach and blow just beyond the surf line. They are so large, yet graceful as they submerge for sometimes minutes at a time before they return to the surface and exhale.

Their spouts can be seen for miles on clear days. Any high point along the hills or bluffs in Del Mar is a great vantage point. I’ve been very close to them while surfing. There is such a calm feeling when they approach, knowing their sonar has identified you and yet they don’t exhibit any fear. Often, their calves are with them, adding to the experience of seeing them.

Other times, we’d launch our Zodiak from the beach to get out beyond them, keeping a respectable distance. Seeing them glide under us several feet below our small boat was so exciting, then as they’d surface and flap one of their huge flukes is an unforgettable experience.

There are many places to go during the season to get out among them.

One of my all-time favorites for steak prime-rib, Bully’s also has some great memories. My father bought his first house on 23rd St. in 1964 and rented it out to students from the new UCSD campus in nearby La Jolla.

Each summer we’d move in after the students moved out to work on the house and clean up the yard. It was always hard work. One day, when my brother and I were very young, and after a hard day of work, my Dad took us to Bully’s for dinner.

I remember our waitress was a very attractive young woman, and my father was bantering with her in a friendly conversation. He mentioned that if she wasn’t careful, she might not get her tip. I’ll never forget her reply.

“You know, I don’t work here for the money.” She said with a bright smile.

“I work here for the people I get to meet. In fact, you’d be amazed at the number of ***holes I meet here.”

And with that, she smiled again and walked away.

My father looked at my brother and I, a bit stunned, then broke into a huge smile and laughed. I remember he gave her the biggest tip I’ve ever seen him give anyone.

Whenever I have friends visiting, we always go to Fidel’s for some of the best Mexican food there is. My favorite (and my father’s, too) is the Tostada Suprema.

Heard an amusing story about Fidel, the owner of Fidel’s Little Mexico in Solana Beach Carlsbad. He is a frequent visitor to the track and a few years ago he came into the Turf Club parking lot and brought some taquito dinners for the crew. One of the guys gave him a tip on a horse, a longshot. After the races, Fidel came in with a long face.”Did you bet the horse?” asked the captain of the lot.

“I did”, he said -” it was 20 to 1 and came in first! I put $20 dollars on it.”

“That’s great!” said the captain.

“Well… I gave it all back on the next race” said Fidel. “Do you still have any of those taquito dinners left?”

“Yes, I haven’t eaten mine yet – the others did and they were delicious.”

“Well, I need yours back so I can sell it at the restaurant”, said Fidel with a smile as he drove off.

This site is a collection of facts about this scenic beach community: the people, the history, the shopping and restaurants, and the many recreational activities available to a visitor. But it will be different than the travelogues or commercial sites.

My goal is to inform and educate about Del Mar, in a humorous way, with anecdotes and personal experiences from this lifelong lover of the beach ‘of the sea’.

Del Mar has a colorful history filled with excitement, pleasure and even has a song recorded by Bing Crosby (click on The Racetrack tab for the link to hear it!) Bing, Pat O’Brien and their friends, such as Jimmy Durante, turned the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club into one of the most beautiful and prestigious organizations in the entire racing world.

Del Mar – Where the turf meets the surf

Del Mar is two square miles along the Northern San Diego County coast, best known for its beaches, fairgrounds and the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club “Where the turf meets the surf.”

With beautiful sandstone canyons interspersed with hillsides of custom homes, and astonishing sunsets, the romantic village of Del Mar is a global destination point for visitors, vacationers and residents alike.
